Oscar Wilde said "All art is quite useless." Then again, Wilde did not go to the "For Art's Sake" art show. Created by graphic artist Jose Lopez, the "For Arts Sake" art show took place Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19 and 20, at The Bubble in Ft. Lauderdale. The event exhibited 16 different artists spanning many different styles and included performances from DJ's Twilight Notes, Michelle Stevens and, the local band, Alexander.

A combination of "passion for fine arts" and a desire to "help enhance the growing art culture in Ft. Lauderdale" is what has catapulted this whole idea," said Lopez. Lopez also mentioned, "People are always complaining about the lack of local art and culture but then they leave to seek it out elsewhere rather than help build one here. A lot of times, we in Broward County are overlooked in comparison to Miami and South Beach with their galleries, but 'For Art's Sake' is meant to say 'Hey, we have talent as well.' "

The works on display included a lot of graphic design, paintings, mixtures of classic and contemporary, mixed media and photographic print infused on metal, to name a few. Some of the most impressive artists were Matylda McIlvenny, John Kissee, Willie Morris, Steve Baum, Olga Volkus and Gwen Gersich.

The show had a great turn out on both nights and hopefully, with motivation from that and with the plethora of talented artists on display here, and even those that were not on display, more shows like this one will be created and we can have access to this amazing art as much as possible.
